Sons went down 2-1 against promotion chasing Accies in this at times ill tempered game. There is a football cliche about "fighting your way out of a division" Accies certainly seemed to taking that to heart.
The match started well, with Craig Lynes scoring his second since joining, heading in a Robertson cross after just three minutes. Shortly after Andy Brown missed a golden opportunity to make it two.
The referee seemed to be doing his utmost to assist Accies as he let numerous shoves, trips and elbows by Accies players go but uncanningly saw every slight infringement by Dumbarton players. Dickie got himself booked for a robust challenge as did Jack for pulling back an Accies attacker.
Accies equalised in the 23rd minute when the unmarked McFarlane found the ball at his feet after it seemed to hit off of Craig Lynes in the box.
In a bizarre moment, the ref, Alan Gemmil, knelt to the ground holding the back of his head and required treatment. What had happened was he was involved in a collision with a Sons player. However he managed to struggle on, continuing with his bad decisions until half time when he was replaced by the linesman who had a much better game.
Just after the restart, Sons fell behind thanks to a well executed Accies' free kick. It was a cracker that left Hillcoat with no chance. In response, Tam Carson took of the ineffectual Chris Smith and put on Craig Brittain. Dumbarton's game picked up. Joe Robertson combined with Brittain on several occasions but nothing substantial came from them.
In the latter stages, Accies could have extended their lead but Hillcoat pulled off a couple of good saves. In end, Accies deserved their victory and demonstrated the sort of attitude you need to get out of Division 3. Here's hoping Tom takes note.
