Dumbarton 0 Berwick Rangers 2

Only 310 people, 27 of which were Berwick fans, turned up for this fairly meaningless game. Ian Wallace stuck by the same formation that so easily beat Albion Rovers the previous week. But that same formation was not able to deliver the goods this week.

There was some nice triangular passing between Mooney, Grace and Melvin but the moves generally fizzled out in front of goal. On the other side of the pitch, Glancy was basically ripping the pish out of the Berwick defenders with some superb dribbling when he came forward but his trickery invariably ended with a misplaced pass. And the linesman was helping much with some dubious offside decisions.

Half time: 0-0 with Dumbarton on top.

The second half was different. In a similar fashion to the game against Alloa, Dumbarton fell apart. The passing game disintegrated and the ball spent much of the time being blasted in the air by both sides.

In the 59th minute, it all went horribly wrong. A cross came in from the right, heading for the edge of the box, Kenny Meechan ran out for it but didn't seem to be aware of the Berwick forward running in. Instead of catching the ball at its highest point, a basic goalkeeping principle, he moved so that he could catch it at shoulder height. But just before the ball got to him, the attacker nipped in and walked the ball into the empty net.

The second goal wasn't much better and Kenny was at fault again. A cross from the left was floated in to a Berwick player just inside the box. Kenny came for it, but got there a fraction too late and the Berwick forward backheaded it over Meechan into the gaping goal. I fully expect to see Derek Barnes in goal next week.

Dumbarton put a couple of attacks together but there was nothing to trouble the Berwick keeper. The only bright spot was that Montrose and Cowdenbeath, our final two opponents, got beat so we could still avoid finishing bottom if the team gets its act together and other results go our way.
